When it gets cold outside, your city heats with charcoal. If the stock runs out, the recovery of all citizens suffers. This article explains how the demand is calculated and what you can do about it.
When Does the City Heat?
Once per night at 00:00, right after the meal. The city takes the required charcoal from the city storage. Nothing is heated at an outside temperature of 15 degrees or more. On warm days the city uses no charcoal at all.
How Much Charcoal Does the City Need?
Three things make the demand bigger:
- More residents: The demand follows your city's difficulty factor. It rises with the number of residents and with the chosen difficulty. Citizens in vacation mode are not counted there, inactive citizens are.
- More cold: From 15 degrees it is warm enough. Every hour below 15 degrees costs charcoal, and the colder it is, the more. Warm hours do not offset cold ones. A cold night therefore costs charcoal even if the day was warm.
- Bigger city: The further the buildings are upgraded, the more rooms must be kept warm.
The last 24 hours are always counted. You do not have to calculate anything. The city page shows how much charcoal the city needs.
An example: A city with a difficulty factor of 10 and moderately upgraded buildings has a cold night at 0 degrees, and the day is warm. It then needs about 26 charcoal. If it were 5 degrees all day, it would be about 51.
The Heating Status
Like with food, the city has a heating status between 50 and 100 percent:
- Stock is enough: The demand is deducted. The status rises by 5 points, up to 100.
- Stock covers at least half of the demand: The whole storage is burned. The status drops by 5 points.
- Stock covers less than half: The whole storage is burned. The status drops by 10 points.
Here too, the status never falls below 50 percent.
What Does the Status Do?
During the nightly recovery, every character only gets back as much health, mana and stamina as the status allows. The worse value of heating status and nutritional status always applies. If the city is fed but freezing, the heating status counts. If it is warm but hungry, the nutritional status counts. The calculation for food is in the article Food Consumption.
Where Does Charcoal Come From?
Charcoal is made in the Charcoal Burner. One wood log becomes five charcoal there. Wood logs come from the Lumberjack. Every new city starts with 500 charcoal in storage.
Tips for Streamers
- On the city page you can see the consumption of last night and how many days the stock will last.
- A big stock is worth it before winter. The demand rises with the cold.
- Upgrading buildings means you need more charcoal afterwards. Keep that in your planning.
- The weather data of your city helps you to foresee cold days.
